Tracasa Global develops an Environmental Inequalities viewer in collaboration with the European Environment Agency
The Government of Navarre’s public company has created an interactive map with a resolution of 1 km2, featuring an analysis of air quality and demographic data from 28 European countries
Tracasa Global, a public company of the Government of Navarre, attached to the Department of Universities, Innovation, and Digital Transformation and the Public Business Corporation of Navarra (CPEN), has developed an Environmental Inequalities viewer in collaboration with the European Environment Agency. The viewer features an interactive map with a resolution of 1 km2, offering analysis of air quality and demographic data for 28 European countries. This new tool is integrated into the European Environment and Health Atlas, which the Navarrese company has been working on since 2022.
This Environmental Inequalities viewer displays exposure to air pollution by population group (children, those over 65, people from other countries, etc.) and by geographic area. This way, each country’s critical points are identified in a highly visual format, by area and pollutant, resulting in a tool that can be extremely useful for creating and implementing measures to reduce inequalities in terms of exposure to air pollution.
The Minister of Universities, Innovation, and Digital Transformation, Juan Luis García, emphasized that “this project reaffirms Tracasa Global’s ability to develop advanced digital tools that support European policies, combining data analysis with geospatial technology.” He also emphasized that “collaboration with the European Environment Agency and the European Commission places Navarre at the heart of strategic EU initiatives, helping to generate key knowledge to improve the lives of citizens.”
Tracasa Global, a leader in developing geospatial solutions for sustainability and environmental care, has been working since 2022 on the European Environment and Health Atlas for the European Environment Agency and the European Commission. The Atlas is a web application that provides information on how pollution and other environmental risks affect the health of European citizens. The app features interactive maps developed by Tracasa Global that display data on various topics, including air pollution, green spaces in urban areas, noise, water, climate, and environmental inequalities.
Tracasa Global has recently added a new service called “Air Pollution in European Capitals in 3D.” Three viewers show how air pollution levels vary across different areas of a city. The maps show the concentrations of PM2.5 particles, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3) in the capitals of all European Union countries, with a resolution of 1 km2, around points of interest in various districts.
Additionally, the European Environment and Health Atlas features a section called “Check Your Place“, one of its main highlights. This feature lets one select any point across Europe and see its levels for nine indicators—seven environmental, and two related to services. The results for each area are presented both numerically and graphically, with layers of information displayed on maps.
All the content in the European Atlas, developed with Esri technology, is closely aligned with the European Union’s environmental goals. As a result, in recent years, it has become one of the European Environment Agency’s leading tools to inform the public and protect the environment.
The application, developed by Tracasa Global’s Software Engineering and Spatial Data Analytics team, also features a “Learn More” section, where anyone can access additional content about the health risks posed by environmental issues and the benefits of a healthy environment.
Tracasa Global has carried out this work under its framework contract with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for the Environment and the European Environment Agency. Under this agreement, the public company of the Government of Navarre provides consulting services and collects, designs, and disseminates environmental data from European countries, which enables European authorities to promote and share numerous initiatives related to sustainability and environmental protection.
